Turn On Learning Manual
The Turn on Learning manual has been developed as an introduction to the concepts we use in our work with children, parents and educators. Illustrated with case examples it encourages the reader to view a child not in terms of behaviours and labels but instead based on their needs to help them learn.

Turn On Learning Mapping Tool
In every classroom, some children find it difficult to engage in learning and expected behaviours. They may have atypical development (autism, ADHD, learning difficulties) or a trauma background that impacts their progress in school. Effective teachers appreciate this impact on a child’s learning and classroom behaviours and strive to maximise accommodations that keep the child engaged.
In 2017 the Gratton institute described that “(n)ew teachers rate handling difficult student behaviours as their top professional challenge ... Nearly one third of all teachers are highly stressed by the challenges of engaging and reengaging students in class.” Teachers actively seek information from educational specialists, psychologists, speech and occupational therapists to support student engagement, but can feel overwhelmed when applying the range of recommendations. Or they feel frustrated when the report indicates the child is 'within normal limits'. We have developed The Turn on Learning framework to provide a holistic understanding of a child, allowing teachers to better apply supportive strategies to improve learning outcomes for students. It helps to explain why a child is seemingly able to perform in one environment, but unable to cope in the busy classroom. The framework can be used for individual students or to map a number of students that may be struggling in the classroom. Determine which switch is off and which strategies will be most effective in turning the switch back on. |
